How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
Dental implants usually cost more up front than dentures. Over 10 to 20 years, though, the math often flips. Here’s how long implants last, what upkeep costs, and how they compare with dentures over time. For current pricing, see our dental implant cost guide.
They can last a lifetime, depending on how well you take care of them. Like other titanium replacements in the body, many implants last 20 years or more. To make yours last as long as possible:
- Get your teeth cleaned regularly
- Use a water flosser daily
- See your doctor for an annual exam to monitor your implants
What Ongoing Maintenance Costs Should I Expect?
Typically, just your regular cleanings and routine exams. Occasionally, something needs to be replaced after an accident; an implant might need to be reevaluated or a crown switched out. But that’s not typical.
If an Implant Fails, Will I Pay for Another Surgery?
At most offices, the answer is yes. At My Dental, we offer a two-year warranty on implants. If you’ve followed our maintenance instructions, kept up with your cleanings and come in for your exams, and an implant fails within those two years, we’ll replace that implant at no additional cost.
Your zirconia teeth are covered separately by the My Dental Lifetime Guarantee.
Are Implants Cheaper Than Dentures over 10 to 20 Years?
Yes. The long-term cost of zirconia teeth and dental implants is less than the cost of dentures or snap-in dentures. And it’s not just financial cost. There are emotional costs, inconvenience and limits on daily life too.
It’s rare for dentures to fit perfectly. They may fit at first, but they’re plastic, and they flex. Denture costs typically come from adjustments and remaking the dentures. You have to remake them at least every five years, they often don’t last that long, and patients typically start struggling with them a lot in year two.
What Are the Hidden Costs of Dentures?
Beyond replacing them, patients with dentures often deal with:
Bone loss is probably the most significant problem. With no teeth in your mouth, the jawbone starts to resorb, or shrink. The body says, “We don’t need it, so we’re going to get rid of it.” That’s when the face starts to age and get that sunken look.
Outside of the cost of adjusting and replacing dentures, the emotional costs and physical discomfort are enough to justify figuring out how to afford dental implants.
What’s the Best-Value Option If I’m Missing All My Teeth?
I would say an All-on-4 with zirconia teeth. If you’re already missing all of your teeth, the hard work is done. All you need is to have the implants placed and your new teeth made. Patients are often surprised that implant placement is virtually painless, especially when there are no extractions. Here’s how All-on-4 vs. All-on-6 cost compares.
Part of the reason is our proprietary medication protocol. We use a long-lasting anesthetic that keeps you numb for an extended time after your procedure. Within 24 hours, patients can usually speak normally again, feel like themselves and manage any discomfort with over-the-counter medicine.
Zirconia is the best value because it lasts the longest. You get biologically compatible, very strong teeth. The roof of your mouth stays uncovered, so you can fully taste your food. You get the strongest chewing ability and the closest thing to natural teeth that technology has given us. With good care, zirconia teeth last 20 years or more, even a lifetime, and the Lifetime Guarantee gives you extra peace of mind. That’s what we call a one-and-done solution. Here’s more on how long zirconia teeth last compared with acrylic.
Should I Replace Failing Teeth with Implants or Keep Repairing Them?
It depends largely on your age. At My Dental Implant Center, we’re still committed to helping you keep your teeth. We don’t want you to get implants if we can avoid it.
Consider how old you are, how long you’ll need those teeth and your financial situation. Sometimes patients try to kick the can down the road and ask us to patch a tooth instead of placing the crown they need, which would last longer. That’s not a good way to approach dentistry. Work with someone you trust who can point you toward the longest-term solution for your goals.
