Zirconia vs. Acrylic at a Glance

If you’re getting full-arch dental implants, one of the biggest choices is what your teeth are made of: zirconia or acrylic. Here’s how they compare, and why we recommend zirconia for your final teeth. For overall pricing, see the cost of dental implants in Mesa.

Is Zirconia Worth the Extra Cost?

I would say the long-term value of a zirconia hybrid far outweighs the initial cost. If you can afford zirconia, that’s the direction you should go. Beyond strength and biological compatibility, there are benefits patients might not consider. It also helps to know what your quote should include.

Do Zirconia Teeth Stain?

No. Zirconia isn’t porous, which is the reason behind our stain-free guarantee. Have a glass of red wine or a cup of coffee, and your teeth won’t stain. They stay the shade you selected when they were delivered.

Why Does It Matter That Zirconia Isn’t Porous?

It matters because zirconia doesn’t harbor bacteria, and bacteria contribute to periodontal issues. Your body accepts it, and there are no foul odors. Traditional acrylic prosthetics, whether a removable denture or acrylic teeth fixed to implants, can harbor bacteria and develop a very distinct odor.

What Are Dental Implants Themselves Made Of?

The implant itself is either titanium or zirconia, and we offer both.

Why Are Temporary Teeth Made of Acrylic?

With an All-on-4, your temporary teeth are a 3D-printed acrylic set. We consider them a short-term solution. We would never give a patient acrylic teeth with the expectation that they’re a long-term decision.

Acrylic absorbs bacteria and stains, and it can fracture, chip, break and crack. If you get an acrylic denture attached to implants, you typically have to replace it about every five years. That adds to the lifetime cost of implants. You invest in implants and end up with only an acrylic set of teeth. That’s why we call them your healing teeth, and we move patients into their final zirconia teeth as quickly as their body allows.

We feel very strongly that zirconia is the best biological material for prosthetic teeth.
